Bankruptcy

Definition:

Bankruptcy occurs when a debtor is legally declared to be unable to pay off creditors. In the United States, this is a federal court process under the Bankruptcy Code.

Once declared bankrupt, a debtor is protected by the state from creditors. The debtor’s assets are then valued and used to repay a portion of the outstanding debt.
